Shall I Drive the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island?

Yes—if you have the time. The West Coast is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular (and least hurried) journeys: rainforest, wild beaches, river gorges, and the famous glacier region near Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.

That said, the West Coast is also remote and weather-driven, so it’s best enjoyed with the right routing, realistic drive times, and a pace that allows for scenic stops.

If you’d like us to tailor it seamlessly—including premium accommodation, private transfers, guides and experiences—start here: Contact Luxury Adventures.

Why the West Coast is worth it

The West Coast is not about ticking off attractions—it’s about the feeling of travelling through a dramatically different New Zealand: lush native rainforest on one side, the Southern Alps on the other, and long stretches of coastline in between.

It pairs beautifully with a South Island journey through Queenstown, Wānaka, Canterbury and Christchurch.

How long do you need? (realistic minimums)

Minimum: 3 days (best for “I want to see it”)

Choose this if you want the iconic scenery and glacier region without rushing too hard.

  • Day 1: Wānaka → Glacier region (Franz Josef / Fox)
  • Day 2: Glacier region → Hokitika area (or a slow scenic day with stops)
  • Day 3: Hokitika → Arthur’s Pass → Christchurch / Canterbury

Ideal: 4–5 days (best experience)

This gives you time to actually enjoy the West Coast—short walks, viewpoints, and flexibility around weather.

Extended: 6–7 days (for travellers who love slow luxury)

Add extra nights for deeper exploration, private guiding, and weather-proofing.

Best route options (the two most popular ways to do it)

Option 1: Self-drive West Coast loop (Queenstown/Wānaka to Christchurch)

This is the classic routing if you’re travelling south to north (or vice versa) and want the full road-trip feel.

Typical drive times (approx.)

  • Wānaka → Glacier region: ~3.5 hours
  • Queenstown → Glacier region: ~5 hours
  • Glacier region → Hokitika: ~1 hour 45 minutes
  • Hokitika → Christchurch (via Arthur’s Pass): ~3.5–4 hours

Why it works: It naturally connects the Southern Lakes with Canterbury and gives you a wildly scenic cross-section of the South Island.

Option 2: TranzAlpine train + car (low-stress, high-scenery)

If you’d rather reduce driving time but still see the best landscapes, consider the TranzAlpine Scenic Train:

  • Christchurch → Greymouth (approx. 4.5 hours), then
  • collect a car (or we arrange a private transfer) and continue south to the glacier region.

This option is excellent for travellers who want a more relaxed pace while still experiencing the dramatic transition from the Canterbury Plains into the Southern Alps and down to the rainforest coast.

What to expect (and how to plan around it)

Weather is part of the West Coast story

The West Coast can be calm and crystal-clear—or moody and atmospheric. Both are beautiful, but it’s wise to plan with flexibility and avoid stacking too many “must-do” items into a single day.

Scenic stops are the whole point

The best West Coast days are built around frequent stops, short walks, viewpoints, and unhurried lunches—not just getting from A to B.

Luxury ways to do the West Coast (without compromising comfort)

If you love the scenery but prefer a seamless, premium experience, we can design the route in a way that feels effortless:

  • Private driver / guide for sections where you’d rather not self-drive
  • Helicopter scenic flights when weather and routing allow (a great way to elevate the experience)
  • Upgraded accommodation to ensure comfort in a remote region
  • A pacing plan that includes buffer time for weather and spontaneous stops

If you’re travelling as a couple, with family, or with friends, we’ll match the journey style to you—relaxed and refined, with the logistics handled.

So… should you drive it?

Choose the West Coast drive if you:

  • have at least 3 days to allocate,
  • enjoy scenic roads and dramatic landscapes,
  • want a quieter, more nature-forward part of the South Island.

Consider the train + transfer version if you:

  • prefer less driving, more comfort,
  • want the scenery with an easier pace,
  • are building a multi-region itinerary and want smooth connections.

Either way, it can be a highlight of a South Island journey when routed properly.
