Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat – Where Luxury Meets the Stars (Literally)

Finally ticking Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat off our list felt like a win. It’s one of those places we’ve been meaning to get to for ages, and from the moment we arrived, we knew it was going to be worth the wait.

We made the scenic drive from Christchurch, passing the stunning Lake Tekapo, and just when you think the water can’t get any bluer—you hit Lake Pukaki. It’s genuinely next-level. It’s here, right on the edge of this unreal lake, that Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat is tucked away. Two of the villas enjoy direct views of Lake Pukaki, while the other two (and the main Homestead) look out over the rugged Ben Ohau Range—just as jaw-dropping in its own moody, mountainous way.

A Bit About the Place

Built with heart and vision, the Retreat was designed to offer guests a truly luxurious experience in one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking regions. There are four villas in total, plus the Homestead, each with its own special charm, a whole lot of space, and a strong sense of peaceful privacy.

We were warmly greeted by the team and taken on a little tour before being shown to our villa. Walking in, the first thing that struck me was how grand it felt—but without being over the top. Think refined, welcoming, and beautifully done. The villa was incredibly spacious, with two large bedrooms, a cosy lounge area, and a gorgeous bathroom with a big picture window framing the Ben Ohau mountains. Each villa also has its own private spa pool, perfectly positioned for a soak with a book, a drink, or both.

There’s so much space in these villas, you could easily have a massage therapist come in without having to rearrange a single piece of furniture. (And yes, you should absolutely book that massage.)

Stunning mountain views

Fireside Feasting

That night, we made our way to the Homestead for dinner—another beautiful building, complete with a roaring fire and glowing candlelight. We were treated to a six-course meal, and every single dish was exceptional. Fresh, local, thoughtful food… beautifully presented and perfectly paced. I only gave Steve half my dessert because I physically couldn’t finish it—not because I didn’t love it. (He was thrilled either way.)

What stood out most was how personal the service felt. One couple we chatted to were still full from the night before, so when they mentioned skipping the full six courses, the response was, “No problem—what would you like instead?” That kind of flexibility and genuine hospitality is what sets this place apart.

Stars, Wine & A Bit of Magic

Now here’s the part that really made the stay unforgettable—the Dark Sky Observatory experience. Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat has its very own observatory, complete with a nearby wine cellar (as all good observatories should have, obviously). The roof opens up to reveal one of the clearest skies on Earth, and under the guidance of the amazing Igor, we were taken on a journey through the cosmos.

He had us completely hooked—pointing out constellations, planets, and even a galaxy or two. We even managed to get this incredible image taken by Igor, making the experience all the more memorable. It’s the kind of moment you just don’t forget.

A Slow, Soulful Start

The next morning was a slow and beautiful one. Low clouds hung over the hills, and we watched baby deer playing in the nearby paddocks while sipping coffee in our robes (because, why not?). After a lazy soak and a bit of reading, we wandered back to the Homestead for breakfast—where I had a cheesy omelette so good I’m still thinking about it. A quick catch-up with Gary, the lovely GM, and just like that, it was time to hit the road.

Make the Most of Your Stay

If you’re heading this way, we highly recommend staying at least three nights. It gives you time to truly settle in, soak up the views, and explore the surrounding area without rushing.

Some ideas to add to your itinerary:

  • Hike or take a scenic flight in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (just 40 mins away)
  • Stargaze right from your villa—or go all-in at the observatory
  • Visit Lake Pukaki Lookout for the ultimate photo op
  • Soak in Tekapo Springs on your way in or out
  • Enjoy a massage in-villa, or just slow down and watch the deer do their thing
