Jean-Michel Cousteau: The Rolls Royce of family friendly luxury resorts in Fiji

Introduction

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji, is a high-end sanctuary for those seeking an intimate connection with nature, luxury, Fijian cuisine and culture. JMC is an all inclusive, eco-friendly resort offering a unique blend of luxury and sustainability. This beautiful resort was curated by oceanographer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the legendary Jacques Cousteau who is the co inventor of the first underwater breathing apparatus.

Location

Located in the serene coastal town of Savusavu on Fiji’s second-largest island, Vanua Levu. Its set against the backdrop of Savusavu’s rich marine life and unspoiled beauty. The resort is renowned for its world-class Scuba Diving, Kids Club, exceptional service, and its commitment to environmental conservation. It a testament to the beauty and culture of Fiji.

Our journey began with a scenic 35-minute plane ride from Fiji’s capital city, Suva. There are similar options to fly from Nadi as well. When making your way from the Savusavu airport, the town feels like its built into the side of a mountain overlooking water, which is the main attraction, almost in an amphitheatre type way. Strikingly beautiful, it was originally established as a port for trade ships, now it’s a fast-developing tourist hotspot, full of beautiful yachts and known as “the hidden paradise of Fiji.”

As part of a three-month exploration of Fiji and its islands, we embarked on a mission to discover the best accommodation and activities to recommend to our valued clients. Myself & my wife Dee, along with our two young daughters, had the pleasure of experiencing the luxury, activities and hospitality of Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.

The Resort’s Philosophy: Where Luxury Meets Sustainability

The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort stands out not just for its luxurious accommodation but also for its deep commitment to sustainability. Built on the principle that luxury and environmental stewardship can coexist, the resort integrates eco-friendly practices throughout its operations.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the resort is its dedication to preserving Fiji’s marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The resort runs on sustainable energy sources, including solar power, and employs water conservation methods. Its organic garden supplies fresh produce, reducing the need for imported goods and minimising its carbon footprint. The resort’s commitment to sustainability is also seen in its wastewater management system, which recycles water for landscaping.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort goes beyond the typical luxury experience by offering guests the chance to learn about the environment. The resident marine biologist leads educational excursions, snorkelling trips, and presentations to help guests understand the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. This combination of luxury and learning ensures that guests leave with not only unforgettable memories but also a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Accommodation: Traditional Fijian Bures with a Modern Touch

The accommodation at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is designed to offer the ultimate in comfort while staying true to traditional Fijian architecture. The resort features a variety of bures, or traditional thatched-roof huts, that blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. These bures are crafted from local materials, including timber and palm fronds, and are furnished with elegant yet understated decor that reflects the beauty of Fiji.

Each bure is equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, plush bedding, and spacious bathrooms. Many of the bures are situated directly on the beach, offering stunning views of the ocean, while others are nestled in the lush tropical gardens. With just 25 bure’s the resort has that boutique feel, and personalised service. You feel truly taken care of at JMC.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the accommodations. Solar panels power the bures, and natural ventilation systems reduce the need for excessive energy consumption. The use of biodegradable toiletries and eco-friendly cleaning products further highlights the resort’s dedication to preserving the environment.

The Master Bedroom, which is breath-taking in its size and layout, is bordered on 2 sides by a walled courtyard which contains a waterfall, an outdoor shower and a private grassed area for private sun-bathing.  The internal bathroom which houses another shower, a spa bath and 2 separate vanities opens directly into the walled courtyard and the bedroom proper is raised 4 steps up from where the bathroom joins the bedroom.  A deck seamlessly joins the bedroom and this deck leads out to the Day Bed Bure on the same level.  The Day Bed Bure, which houses a King Day Bed, is a thatched bure which is open on the 2 sides where it joins the deck and the private swimming pool.
From the deck outside the main bedroom there are 4 steps down to a lower deck where you find a BBQ and an outdoor dining setting for 4.  A separate lounge bure complete with kitchenette and bathroom, runs directly off this lower deck.  The lounge bure converts to a second bedroom if required.

Highly regarded: The best for families

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is widely regarded as the best resort for families and kids due to its unparalleled focus on creating a fun, educational, and safe environment for all ages. The resort’s Bula Club for Kids, a complimentary program, offers engaging activities led by expert staff, ensuring children are entertained while learning about Fijian culture, nature, and marine life. With dedicated nannies for younger children and buddy systems for older kids, parents can enjoy their time knowing their little ones are in great hands. From snorkelling lessons, environmental workshops, and arts and crafts to fun-filled adventures like coconut husking and crab races, kids are constantly stimulated with a blend of fun and discovery. Additionally, the resort’s family-friendly accommodation, eco-tours, and cultural experiences ensure that both parents and children create lasting memories together. The Bula Club also has two separate waterslides to choose from in addition to the other activities!

We were very impressed at how well things were organised on a daily basis throughout our stay. Part of the service includes night duties until 9:30pm, which allowed us to go for dinner. For the bigger kids there is a movie room. When you stay at JMC, you are provided with one nanny per child. Our kids (as did we) felt very secure with our nannies Jay-Line and Kalessi.

All inclusive meals rooted in Fijian Tradition

Dining at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is an experience in itself. The resort’s restaurant offers a menu that celebrates Fijian cuisine while incorporating international flavours. The focus is on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with much of the produce coming from the resort’s organic garden. Seafood is a staple of the menu, with daily catches from the surrounding waters featuring prominently in many dishes.

The culinary team at the resort takes pride in crafting meals that not only satisfy the palate but also support local farmers and fishermen. Guests can expect to enjoy traditional Fijian dishes such as kokoda (a marinated fish salad similar to ceviche), lovo (food cooked in an underground oven), and a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables. The restaurant also caters to special dietary needs, ensuring that all guests can enjoy the flavours of Fiji. I can tell you first-hand the food was outstanding. Lots of daily seafood options, but also lots of options to choose from the menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner as well. The kids also had comprehensive meal plans, with the options to dine on the family restaurant, or in the kids club, the choice is yours!

For those looking to take home some recipes, the resort offers cooking classes where guests can learn how to prepare traditional Fijian dishes. These classes provide a hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the island’s culinary traditions. Dining at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is not just about enjoying delicious food; it’s about learning the local cuisine!

Enjoy many wonderful options, like dining at the pier’s edge, beachside at the Raikiwasa or Lali bures, or on the poolside decks, or sail off to our private island for a tailor-made culinary experience. Whether it’s a light breakfast, morning tea, lunch, or sunset dinner, the choice is yours. You can also indulge in a picnic at Lesiaceva Point, surrounded by lush greenery, or savour a private BBQ for an unforgettable outdoor feast.

One of the defining features of Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is its deep connection to Fijian culture. The resort emphasizes cultural immersion, offering guests the opportunity to learn about and engage with the local community. From traditional Fijian dance performances to village tours, the resort provides a window into the rich cultural heritage of Fiji.

The resort’s staff, many of whom are from nearby villages, are eager to share their knowledge and traditions with guests. This sense of community is at the heart of the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort experience. Guests are not just visitors; they are welcomed as part of the extended Fijian family.

The resort also supports local development initiatives, including education and health programs in the surrounding villages. By staying at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, guests are contributing to these efforts, making their stay not only a luxurious escape but also a meaningful way to give back to the community.
