Hobbiton & LOTR Film Locations in New Zealand

In fact, New Zealand is the real Middle-earth. Sir Peter Jackson chose this country for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Today, travellers can visit the actual film locations. The most famous is Hobbiton, on a working sheep farm near Matamata.

The Story of Hobbiton

In 1998, Peter Jackson’s location scouts searched for rolling green hills. They found them on the Alexander family farm. This 1,250-acre sheep farm sits in the heart of the Waikato, on the North Island. The land remained untouched. There were no power lines, no buildings, and no roads in sight. As a result, it made the perfect place to recreate the Shire.

Construction of Hobbiton began in March 1999. It took nine months to create 39 temporary Hobbit Holes. After filming, only the plywood shells remained. Later, those shells became the start of the Hobbiton tours in 2002.

Meanwhile, Peter Jackson returned in 2009 to film The Hobbit trilogy. His team rebuilt 44 permanent Hobbit Holes. The Green Dragon Inn opened in 2012. These sets now form the Hobbiton Movie Set, welcoming visitors all year round.

What to Expect on the Tour

The tour covers a 12-acre set. First, you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, Bag End, the Party Tree, and the Mill Bridge. You will also wander through the gardens. Finally, you finish at the Green Dragon Inn.

Every tour includes a full-time guide. You cannot explore on your own. Instead, you join a coach from the visitor centre and travel into the set. Your guide shares stories of how the movie magic came together. You can even step inside a couple of the Hobbit Holes. You will find plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

At the end, the Green Dragon Inn welcomes you with a complimentary drink. Choose from two handcrafted ales, an apple cider, or a non-alcoholic ginger beer. You will also find a cafe and a souvenir store on site.

Planning Your Visit

Hobbiton is a two-hour drive from Auckland. It is only one hour from Rotorua. Tours run regularly through the day, so you should allow two hours for the tour itself. Pre-booking is essential, especially in peak season.

More Film Locations in the North Island

Hobbiton remains the only film set that survives. However, many other North Island locations starred in the films.

Piopio — For example, this small town in the Waitomo District features unusual limestone formations and prehistoric forest. The area became Trollshaws Forest and Staddles Farm in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Piopio is also close to the famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves.

Turoa, Mt Ruapehu — This ski field in Tongariro National Park served as Hidden Bay, the entrance to the Lonely Mountain. Nearby, Mt Ngauruhoe appeared on screen as Mt Doom. The region is also home to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s best day walks.

Film Locations in the South Island

Meanwhile, the South Island provided some of the most dramatic backdrops in the films.

Twizel — The largest battle scene ever filmed, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, took place in a remote field near Twizel. The Wargs chase also happened here. Twizel is a great base for exploring Mt Cook.

Queenstown & Wanaka — These regions feature towering mountains, ancient forests, and glacial rivers. Scenes filmed here include Minas Tirith, the Misty Mountains, the Pillars of the Kings, Isengard, and Lothlorien. Nelson & Tasman — Takaka Hill became Chetwood Forest, and Golden Bay played the Weatherhills. Horse treks offer a wonderful way to see these private locations.
