Paperbark Camp Jervis Bay
Paperbark Camp Jervis Bay
description

Conceived over a few sundowners on safari in Africa in the eighties, Paperbark Camp officially opened in 1999 after years of dreaming and planning by the owners, Jeremy & Irena Hutchings. With the help of their family and a dedicated team of staff, the camp remains a family operated business and continues to be at the forefront of ecotourism and luxury camping in Australia.

Just 2 ½ hrs drive south of Sydney, near the pristine clear waters and white sand beaches of Jervis Bay, the camp offers a unique blend of fine food and wine, cosy canvas accommodation and a peaceful bush setting,  the perfect base from which to explore this nature lover’s paradise.

The Paperbark Story

It all started in Africa in the early 90’s over a few ‘sundowners’ with good friends in their private safari camp. We had travelled to Africa a couple of times and just loved the tented style of accommodation we experienced there and thought that the same concept would be ideal for Australia. Having been enthusiastic campers in our earlier years we still loved the feeling it gives of really being amongst nature, but no longer could be bothered with the planning, packing and unpacking required for more traditional camping.

On our return, we happened to discover beautiful Jervis Bay and it’s pristine environment and at the same time noticed there was not much accommodation available, unless you knew someone with a house in the area…perhaps this could be the place for our much dreamed about camp? The idea of creating our own Aussie version of the African camp experience really started to take hold.

Our African inspired canvas safari tents have been thoughtfully placed amongst the soaring eucalyptus and intriguing paperbarks, built above the ground to give privacy and comfort and to  capture the sea breeze.

The camp experience:

After a delicious dinner in our treetop dining room, grab your torch and meander back under the stars to snuggle up in your own bush hideaway, lulled into a restful sleep by the sounds of the bush at night.

Our canvas safari style tents have been placed thoughtfully amongst the soaring eucalyptus and intriguing paperbarks, built above the ground to give privacy and to capture the sea breeze. All tents have wrap around decking with outdoor furniture, polished hardwood floors, full insect screening, solar powered lighting as well as high quality linen and all the hotel amenities you would expect for a luxe camping experience.

They also include an open air private en suite, with freestanding bath and shower, perfect for bird watching and kangaroo spotting while you enjoy a steaming hot shower. Delicious hand made soaps and lotions made from natural ingredients and gowns are also provided. Create a romantic candle lit oasis amongst the gum trees… you’ll never pitch your own tent again!

Note: Paperbark Camp follows a sustainable philosophy and has Advanced Eco Accreditation. As such, you will not find air conditioning, TV, bar fridge or power points though we do offer 12V USB ports that can charge phones. Wifi is limited in tents and mobile data can also be limited depending on your service provider.

Full power and free guest wifi is available in the Gunyah but we encourage our guests to think about using their time with us as a great opportunity to switch off and get back to nature!
