The Sounds Retreat: A Private Luxury Escape in the Marlborough Sounds

We were recently fortunate enough to experience The Sounds Retreat, tucked into the Marlborough Sounds. From the breathtaking views to the luxurious private suite and the warm hospitality of hosts Tony & Anne, it’s easy to see why this lodge is a favourite among guests seeking privacy and indulgence.

Location and Getting There

The Sounds Retreat sits at Anakiwa, right on the doorstep of the Queen Charlotte Track and just 45 minutes from Blenheim Airport. Guests can self-drive or arrange an airport transfer, and a range of touring options are available during your stay to help you explore the wider region.

Kayaking the Marlborough Sounds

Many guests begin their stay with a morning of kayaking. Just five minutes from the lodge, Anakiwa Bay is the launch point for guided trips with local operator Sea Kayak Adventures. After a safety briefing, you’ll paddle calm, sheltered waters, spotting seals and little blue penguins along the way, with plenty of stops at secluded beaches to stretch your legs. Guides tailor each trip to your fitness level, and both half and full-day options can be arranged as part of your itinerary.

The Suite

Arriving at The Sounds Retreat, guests are welcomed by Tony & Anne into a spacious, open-plan suite. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames uninterrupted views over the Marlborough Sounds, opening onto a private deck where dolphins, kayakers and sailboats can often be spotted.

The suite is designed for total relaxation, featuring:

  • A large en-suite bathroom with rain shower and heated floors

  • A private hot tub and outdoor deck with sun-loungers and heating

  • A fully stocked mini bar with complimentary beverages

  • Espresso machine and tea and coffee facilities

  • Entertainment including satellite TV and music docking

Dining at The Sounds Retreat

Dinner is included as part of the lodge’s all-inclusive rate, with Tony preparing a wonderful multi-course meal enjoyed in the heated cabana while the sun sets over the Sounds. Expect thoughtfully paired local wines and dishes showcasing the best of New Zealand produce, from fresh seafood to indulgent desserts.

Adventure on Your Doorstep

The Sounds Retreat sits right at the start of the Queen Charlotte Track, offering 70km of trail for walking, running or mountain biking. Guests can head out directly from the lodge, or take a water taxi to various points along the track and make their way back to Anakiwa Bay on foot or by bike. The team at The Sounds Retreat and Luxury Adventures can arrange water taxi transfers as needed.

Why We Recommend It
