First Impressions

As soon as you pull down the drive, you feel yourself relax.

The suites are spacious and thoughtfully designed. We stayed in a pool room suite, which included a fire for winter nights and a private veranda for warm summer evenings.

The bathrooms are equally generous, featuring:

• Double sinks

• A large rainforest shower head

• A stone soaker bath

Room Options

Guests can choose between three room styles:

• Pool room suites — spacious rooms with an in-room fire and private veranda

• Lake front rooms — located at the front of the lodge with direct lake views, a private veranda, and outdoor fires

• Lake view rooms — lake views with the same relaxed, private outdoor setting

Every room includes a mini bar stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, plus the usual tea and coffee.

Dining at Black Swan

On our first evening, we ate in Rotorua at “Eat Street,” which offers plenty of options to suit everyone.

On the Saturday night, Arthur invited us to dine at the lodge itself. The dining room sits on the second floor, with sweeping views over the lake and a warm fire.

The menu is Pacific fusion, and the kitchen caters to all dietary requirements. We know this firsthand — our group included a vegetarian and a fussy teenager. The chef took the time to walk us through options in the kitchen, preparing separate meals for the kids while the adults chose from the evening menu.

Highlights from our meal included:

• A pâté entrée, which was delicious

• Salmon, chosen by my husband

• Duck and lamb mains, both fantastic

We were far too full for dessert, even with a tempting lemon tart on the menu.

On-Site Spa

Black Swan Lodge has an on-site spa with an in-house therapist available to guests at all times. Bookings are recommended, as patrons from other hotels and locals also use the facility.

During our stay, we enjoyed a decadent one-hour facial. The spa also offers massage and other treatments.
