Hayman Island is the northernmost island in the Whitsunday Passage on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland — and one of Australia’s most iconic luxury escapes. As part of our ongoing series looking at the incredible properties we work with across the South Pacific, we’re taking a closer look at what makes Hayman such a front-row seat to the Reef.
Ready to experience Hayman Island for yourself? Contact Luxury Adventures to start planning your bespoke Great Barrier Reef escape.
Hayman sits closer to the Outer Barrier Reef than any other Whitsunday island. Highlights include:
Blue Pearl Bay – world-class snorkelling just 10 minutes from the marina, home to roughly 1,500 fish species and 400 types of coral.
Langford Island – a slender sandbar in the Coral Sea, perfect for a gourmet picnic and turtle-spotting.
Whitehaven Beach – one of the world’s most photographed beaches, stretching 7km along Whitsunday Island, accessible by air or water.
Outer Reef access – by seaplane or helicopter, for guests wanting to go further afield.
The journey is part of the experience. Guests can arrive via:
Luxury launch from Great Barrier Reef Airport or Shute Harbour, with check-in and activity bookings completed on board.
Helicopter or seaplane, for sweeping aerial views of the Whitsundays en route.
Thinking about which transfer suits your trip? Talk to us — we tailor every arrival to match the occasion.
Hayman offers four distinct precincts:
Hayman Pool – classic, active-guest-friendly rooms overlooking one of Australia’s largest resort pools.
Hayman Lagoon – spacious, elegant rooms and suites on the resort’s tranquil eastern side.
Hayman Beach – 8 Beach Villas, a private Beach House and Retreat Rooms in a secluded beachfront setting, with dedicated Beach Butler service.
Hayman Penthouses – including the DVF Penthouse (designed by Diane von Furstenberg) and the ultra-premium Owner’s Penthouse, both with personalised butler service.
Four signature restaurants anchor the Hayman dining scene:
Azure – beachfront Australian cuisine with a seafood focus.
La Trattoria – al fresco Italian, from antipasti to wood-fired pizza.
Oriental – Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indian dishes with garden and tea house views.
Fontaine – contemporary Australian cuisine from locally sourced produce.
For a more intimate experience, the Chef’s Table offers a six-course dinner with matched wines in the Main Kitchen, while Fontaine Bench serves a 12-course tasting menu for two — both including a Wine Cellar tour and a visit to the Chocolate Room.
Island Escapade – a speedboat trip to Langford Island or Blue Pearl Bay, with an optional Gourmet Picnic Hamper.
Ocean Massage – Hayman Spa’s signature treatment, performed in tranquil waters surrounded by tropical fish.

Named in 1866 after navigator Thomas Hayman, the island has hosted big-game fishing legends (including novelist Zane Grey), starred in Australia’s classic Barrier Reef TV series, and welcomed record-breaking ocean rowers Sylvia Cook and John Fairfax in 1972 after 361 days at sea. Aviation pioneer Reginald Ansett built the original Royal Hayman Hotel in 1950, and the resort has undergone continuous luxury reinvestment since, including a A$300 million transformation from 1985 and its induction into The Leading Hotels of the World in 1987.
How do I get to Hayman Island?
Via luxury launch from Great Barrier Reef Airport or Shute Harbour, or by helicopter/seaplane for a scenic aerial transfer.
What’s the best accommodation option for families?
Hayman Pool rooms and suites, thanks to their proximity to the pool and pool bar.
Is Hayman suitable for weddings and honeymoons?
Yes — the island is a popular choice for ceremonies, receptions and romantic escapes, with multiple scenic locations across the resort.
What’s the “must-do” activity at Hayman?
The Island Escapade — a speedboat trip to Langford Island or Blue Pearl Bay for swimming, snorkelling and a picnic lunch.
Hayman Island remains one of the most spectacular gateways to the Great Barrier Reef — combining five-star luxury, exceptional dining and direct access to some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling. At Luxury Adventures, we love pairing a Hayman stay with the rest of Queensland’s Whitsundays for a truly front-row Reef experience.
