Charming, Quirky, and Utterly Luxurious: Our Stay at Hulbert House, Queenstown

I have to admit—any accommodation that hands me a chilled glass of bubbles within moments of arrival is already speaking my language. Paired with warm, thoughtful service, I knew straight away we were in for something special at Hulbert House in Queenstown.

Located just a short walk above the town centre, Hulbert House is a beautifully restored Victorian villa turned boutique luxury lodge. With sweeping views across Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, the setting is as breathtaking as the property itself.

The Rooms

This is no cookie-cutter hotel. With just seven individually styled suites, Hulbert House feels more like staying in a character-filled private residence—with all the perks of five-star hospitality. We stayed in the Grand Room, which featured incredible views and what can only be described as the most comfortable bed and pillows I’ve ever experienced. Seriously—I could’ve happily spent the entire stay wrapped up in that cocoon of comfort.

The interiors are a delightful mix of old-world elegance and playful charm. Think rich wallpapers, statement antiques, plush fabrics, and just the right amount of whimsy to keep things interesting. It’s bold, beautiful, and incredibly cosy.

Location

The location is a dream. You’re just a short stroll from Queenstown’s buzzing bar and restaurant scene, yet far enough removed to feel calm and peaceful. We wandered down for dinner at Soda, which was fantastic—and the fact that I managed the walk there and back in heels without a single complaint says everything you need to know about how close and convenient it is.

The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast—fresh, flavourful, and served with a side of great conversation, courtesy of the lovely Jay, Hulbert House’s exceptional GM. You can tell the team here genuinely loves what they do. Every detail is considered, and every guest is treated like an old friend.

Our stay was short but unforgettable. Hulbert House is one of those rare places that combines luxury, personality, and heart in all the right ways. If you’re planning a trip to Queenstown and want something truly special, this is it.
