Kauri Cliffs Lodge sits just above the Bay of Islands, a half-hour drive from the town of Kerikeri and a short flight from Auckland. Set on 6,000 acres near Matauri Bay, Northland, The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs affords spectacular 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Cape Brett and the offshore Cavalli Islands are part of the panorama which can be viewed from the verandas, lounge, card and dining rooms. Kauri Cliffs entrance, which sits at the end of an unpaved road, is so understated you wonder if they are trying to keep the place a secret. Once inside, the landscape is dramatic, overwhelming. Emerald hills are clustered with ink-dark ancient trees. A 50,000-year-old kauri stump exhumed from a methane swamp stands as a ghostly vestige of the forests that once blanketed the North Island. Streams and waterfalls ribbon down the ravines to a panorama of the South Pacific and two miles of private beach. Kauri Cliffs lodge itself - a stylish mix of Greek Revival South Carolina plantation house and East Hampton summer cottage - is very much the creation of Josie Robertson. A wide, white-columned verandah with rocking chairs wraps around the pale-grey clapboard facade, which has floor-to-ceiling French doors and bay windows. An experience to behold!
The golf course at Kauri Cliffs was designed and built by David Harman of Golf Course Consultants, Orlando, Florida.
The par 72 championship golf course measures 7,119 yards/ 6,510 metres and offers five sets of tees to challenge every skill level. Fifteen holes view the Pacific Ocean, six of which are played alongside cliffs which plunge to the sea. The beautiful inland holes wind through marsh, forest and farmland.
The golf complex at Kauri Cliffs Lodge includes a world-class practice range, putting and chipping greens, a well stocked golf shop, and ladies’ and mens’ locker rooms. Callaway ladies’ and mens’ rental clubs are available.
Facilities: Golf course, Heated pool, spa pool, three private beaches, walking trails, spa baths, wine cellar, conference room, private rivers and streams, golf cart access to chalets, heli-pad, tennis courts, fitness centre.
