Tongariro
Read about our weekend at Tongariro. Tongariro National Park is located in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. In the ‘Central Plateau’ the underlying rocks and soils are of volcanic origin; so it is sometimes known as the “Volcanic Plateau” or the greater region can also be known as the ‘Ring of Fire’. Tongariro was the first national park and World Heritage area in New Zealand, so has plenty of cultural and geological history that can be enjoyed and explored by visitors each year. There is a lot to see and do, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter in Ohakune to Mountain biking and hiking in the Summer months.
Hunting, climbing, mountaineering, fishing are further examples of whats on offer in this underrated location – The Tongariro region doesn’t have the same tourist pull of some of New Zealands better known locations but is well worth a visit. Short hikes and long hikes are both available in the Tongariro area including the famous great walk “The Tongariro Crossing”. This is often considered one of the best one day walks in the world. Mt. Ruapehu in the Tongariro region is an active volcano, however there is generally 50 years between eruptions. As eruptions are very rare, the winter months provide great skiing conditions for visitors between July and September.

Mt. Ruapehu
Mt. Ruapehu is a great base from which many activities can be done, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter, hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months, there is something for everyone.
Ski Fields at Mt. Ruapehu:
Whakapapa is on the northern side of Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park in the North Island, it is one of Ruapehu’s two commercial ski fields. Whakapapa is New Zealand’s biggest ski field with 43 runs ranging from beginner to off piste expert. Located on Ruapehu’s south west side, Turoa is the only other commercial ski field on Mt. Ruapehu. Turoa has the largest vertical drop of any ski resort in Australasia, the high altitude and south west facing slopes means plenty of dry snow from July until September
