The Kinloch Golf Club, Taupo, North Island, New Zealand - Key partner for the 2025 Ultra-Luxe New Zealand Golf Tour

With the recent launch of New Zealand’s first Ultra-Luxe Golf Tour, Luxury Adventures is conducting some Q&A’s and will be able to unveil an exciting preview of the upcoming tour. In this series of interviews, we have the honor of getting some insights and connecting with the individuals who will make this journey a truly exceptional experience.

The Kinloch Club is just a 20 min drive from Taupo in the Waikato region of the North Island. The world acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and is continually rated in the top few courses in New Zealand.

We have the pleasure of discussing The Kinloch Club with Mike West, the Golf Manager, who was happy to answer some questions about this stunning facility.

Thanks for having us Mike, could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you have been involved in golf as a career?

I’ve been golf manager here for 5 months after hosting a morning radio show in Palmerston North for 35 years. I’ve played golf all my life and always planned to work for a top NZ Golf Course when I finished in Radio. I hit the jackpot getting a job here.

Where is The Kinloch Club located, & could you let us know the history of the course?

The Jack Nicklaus signature designed course was completed in 2007 on the hills above Kinloch with beautiful views across lake Taupo. The Manor and luxury Villas were added and opened in 2016.

What types of unique features or design elements of The Kinloch club stand out to you for its players & visitors?

What’s unique about the golf course is it is rated one of the toughest courses to play in New Zealand. All the greens are well protected by bunkers and long rough. This is also New Zealand’s only Jack Nicklaus signature designed Golf Course.

What’s the course’s par and yardage?

There are five different tee options and Kinloch is considered a long course with five par fives. If you play-off the blacks the course is 6734 m long.

What practice facilities are available (driving range, putting green)?

Kinloch’s practice facility is considered one of the best of the country. Golfers hit off grass into 6 greens set at different distances. There a practice putting green and areas to practice your bunker shots and chipping.

What’s the typical experience like for a golfer playing a round at The Kinloch Club?

Because Kinloch is considered one of New Zealand’s toughest courses, most golfers find their first round a little challenging which is why we encourage them to come back and play a second round. After your second round at Kinloch, you understand the course a lot better.

Do you have a favourite hole or stretch of holes on the course? Any tips for players?

9 and 10 my two favourite holes on the course. Nine is stroke hole one and I’ve never seen a more challenging hole. Immediately following that you’ve got the 10 with a nice big wide open Fairway where you can unleash. The finishing hole is spectacular too with a huge lake on the left.

The Kinloch Club has some beautiful accommodation options on-site, could you let us know a bit about the types of rooms and facilities available for guests?

We have our Manor which is designed to look like a Scottish castle, and that is surrounded by 10 luxury villas. All have deep stone baths, open fires, are fully self-contained and have incredible views across the Kinloch golf course out to Lake Taupo.

Last but not least, New Zealand is one of the most sought after locations for golfers looking at taking a golf vacation, what makes New Zealand such a great destination for travellers in your opinion?

New Zealand is a breathtakingly beautiful country. We have some of the most spectacular golf courses in the world. We are also a very friendly bunch here and we like nothing more than being hospitable to our overseas guests.

Stay tuned for more in-depth conversations with our partners for the Ultra-Luxe New Zealand Golf Tour and get ready to embark on a luxurious journey filled with world-class golf courses, stunning landscapes, and unparalleled experiences.
