Zoli Szalardi Bag Crafting Interview Anthem Culture

Zoli Szalardi

After completing his apprenticeship in the family business, and further honing his skills in Germany, Zoli Szalardi found his way to the shores of New Zealand, opening his own bespoke leather business in Auckland 1971. Today Zoli and his family continue to handcraft Rodd & Gunn luggage as they have done for over 20 years using only the finest leather tanned in Italy. Zoli carefully selects each hide before it is either hand or press cut, the hides are then individually machine sewn in the traditional way, by hand. Each result unique and distinctive within each piece of handmade leather luggage that only gets better with age.

Join Zoli for a demonstration of leather accessory making with fine Italian leather, and hear more of his journey incorporating the finer details, stitch-by-stitch.

Range Rover Sport

Range Rover

Journey in style between activities in the latest Range Rover Sport – and be able to test-drive it too. The first Land Rover made its debut in 1948. It was designed with brilliant simplicity for extraordinary ability and unrivalled strength and durability. In fact, six decades on it is estimated that two-thirds of all these incredible vehicles are still at work – many of them in some of the most extreme conditions and inhospitable places on earth. This culture of innovation has developed ever since with both Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles: new models, more refinement, more innovative technology, more efficiency and fewer emissions. The new small Range Rover is a testament to the vision that takes the company forward and keeps it at the cutting edge of technology and engineering.

Rodd & Gunn

Huka Lodge Executive Chef, Paul Froggatt

Executive Chef, Paul Froggatt, will present a stunning Winemaker’s Dinner with Dr. Stephanie Lambert from Amisfield.

British-born chef Paul Froggatt initially trained in the UK and in France where his career highlights included working at Gidleigh Park Hotel (Two Michelin-Star), Bernard Loiseau en Bourgogne (Three Michelin-Star) and Château de Courcelles (One Michelin-Star). Paul followed this by stints at two of Singapore’s popular leading European restaurants San Marco and Saint Pierre. Paul, bilingual in French and English, accredits this experience for culminating in his desire to relocate his family, including his Singapore-born wife and two small children, to work at New Zealand’s iconic Huka Lodge.

“As a chef, I’ve always had two ambitions for my career. The first was to cook to the highest level of Michelin Stars and I’ve now done this at three of Europe’s great restaurants.”  “The second has been to work at a leading lodge, where I can create the sort of environment where guests feel welcome and at home, almost as if they were in my own kitchen. For this reason, working with Huka Lodge is a dream come true for me.”

Paul and his team will create superb cuisine for guests at the Rodd & Gunn Weekend and he will present a cooking demonstration followed by a lunch featuring one of the dishes he has just demonstrated.

Amisfield Wine

Amisfield

Amisfield was established in 1988 and is a Central Otago based specialist producer of Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines sourced from fruit grown on their Estate vineyard, beneath the Pisa mountain range in the Cromwell basin. This privately owned 200ha property, once a prominent high country merino station, is one of the largest single vineyard estates in the Central Otago region. Over 80ha is currently planted, with the majority of the vines being over ten years old.

Amisfield wines reflect the company’s grape growing and winemaking philosophy underlining faithful expression of the site, minimal winemaking intervention and ultimate fruit purity. Stringent yield management practices deliver concentrated fruit flavour, consistency and complexity derived from the range of soils found on the vineyard. A state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard and produces 25,000 – 30,000 cases of wine annually. Pinot Noir accounts for over 60% of the production with the balance made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

DR STEPHANIE LAMBERT, Winemaker.

Stephanie graduated from the University of Adelaide with a PH.D in Oenology in 2002. Following her graduation Stephanie spent three years in Australia, Oregon and Burgundy, before being drawn back to New Zealand where she joined Sileni Estates in Hawkes Bay. In 2008 Stephanie became assistant winemaker at Amisfield before being appointed winemaker in 2010.

This appointment was a realisation of her long held ambition to make quality Pinot Noir under snow-capped mountains in Central Otago. Stephanie was attracted by the “hands-off” approach to winemaking at Amisfield’s state-of-the-art wine production facility at Pisa. “Amisfield’s ‘grown not made’ concept is so much in line with my own philosophy for making wines with integrity and purity from quality grapes. The standard of viticulture is extremely high and there is an incredible sense of place at Amisfield with the vineyards surrounding the winery and all the winery activity concentrated in one area.”

Sherry and port tasting

Sherry and port tasting in the wine cellar with Liz Wheadon. With a renewed interest globally in fine sherry and port we can think of no better person to introduce you to their complex flavours and how to best enjoy these than Liz.

Initially an interest in a culinary career led Liz to London to attend a Cordon Bleu course, however it soon became apparent that fine wine would be her true passion in life. Liz is the General Manager of Glengarry Wines and has been with them for 16 years. Her role takes her abroad regularly to meet with many of Europe’s finest wine suppliers and also allowed her to see first hand where new directions are developing and where new wine and food trends are going.

The Sealegs experience

The Sealegs experience allows guests to enjoy a unique amphibious adventure on Lake Taupo during this Rodd & Gunn Weekend. SEALEGS® is a revolutionary patented concept in the power boat market. It has been specifically designed and developed to take all the hassle out of the boat launching and retrieval process.

The Sealegs system consists of motorised, retractable and steerable wheels which are fitted to specially designed boats to give users a fully integrated, turn-key package. A Sealegs boat can be driven from a storage location, down a boat ramp or beach and into the water – all with the occupants staying in the boat and remaining completely dry!

Presented with our compliments, at no additional cost beyond the normal rate.
