Glenorchy Eco Adventure, 45 mins from central Queenstown

Delta Discovery is a new Glenorchy eco adventure, 45 minutes drive from central Queenstown. The concept is the brainchild of Andy Aitken, owner operator of Delta Discovery. The 4WD electric vehicles are 100% eco friendly. You take charge of an electric 4WD off road vehicle to explore this stunning landscape. Each vehicle is loaded with interactive GPS technology enabling you to explore the pristine wilderness around the Delta River at your own pace.

The drive to Glenorchy is worth it alone!

I recently visited Queenstown and had the opportunity to experience this fun new adventure. The drive from Queenstown to the Glenorchy eco adventure base is a memorable journey in itself. The road hugs Lake Wakatipu with the most amazing lake and mountain views. Shortly before you reach Delta base you’ll reach the small township of Glenorchy. Here you’ll find a cafe and store where if time permits you could stop for a coffee or fresh fruit ice cream. A further 10 minute drive and you’ll reach Delta Discovery, you can’t miss them.

Experiencing the Eco Adventure

Andy met us at the door and welcomed us in to explain how our adventure would work. Each vehicle has an interactive, multi-lingual GPS guidance system installed. Andy shows us on his computer screen how he can track the Eco adventure vehicles as they move along the river basin. He can also communicate with the drivers as they travel along. In the very unlikely instance anyone wanders of the marked tracks or has a issue with the vehicle Andy can quickly either communicate via message on the onboard screens or if need be head on to the track to assist. The vehicles are very easy to drive. Andy showed us quickly the controls, and safety instructions and off we went!

Driving along riverstone beds, across the Delta River, not a soul in sight. Mountain backdrops and crystal clear waters of the river, along with birdsong is all you can hear. The on-board monitor shows you where the track is and it’s easy to follow. There are also occasional orange dots marked on the river stones or bleached logs that also show the way. There are markers on the screen that highlight areas of interest. If you press on the screen a narrative explains the history, or lets you know the bird life or flora and fauna in the area. You’ll also be informed of Lord of the Rings scenes, with an explanation of what’s in front of you in relation to the LOTR film.

There’s time for a picnic on the river bank

The eco adventure vehicles are yours for as long as you require. Take as much time as you want, enjoy a picnic, stop and skim stones in the river. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and solitude. The Delta Discovery Eco Adventure vehicles are a fun relaxing way to see areas around Queenstown that you would not ordinarily be able to see. A great family adventure, or romantic honeymoon experience to spend time totally alone.
