Learn the history of the area and the rapid change from a farming community to the world-renowned wine region we see today.

Whale Watching at Kaikoura

Every Whale Watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. Kaikoura often hosts the world's largest dolphin - the Orca - and is home to the world's smallest and rarest - the Hector's. Kaikoura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland New Zealand including 13 species of Albatross, 14 varieties of Petrels and 7 types of Shearwater.

Dart River Wilderness Safari

Dart River Wilderness Safari: The Wilderness Safari takes you on a spectacular 1.5 hour jet boat journey through the Dart’s ever-changing braided river system, where you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking snow-covered peaks, hidden valleys and waterfalls. It includes a guided 30 - 40 minute walk through the ‘Heritage Trail’ at Paradise, where your knowledgeable guide will enliven your walk with an informative and entertaining commentary about the unique flora and fauna, as well as the fascinating Maori and colonial history of the area. You‘ll also journey by 4WD coach via a scenic back-road route, while hearing stories about the surrounding countryside and stopping to view scenery that has formed the epic backdrop for many international films, including ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

Routeburn Track Walk/Hike

Enter the wilderness sanctuary of the Mount Aspiring National Park, gateway to the world famous Routeburn Track. Relish the invigorating 6.5km (4 mile) walk to the Routeburn Flats, with time to linger by the river as it meanders across the alpine meadow. As you walk enjoy the unique flora and birdlife of the Routeburn Valley. For those who want a little more adventure, the 300m (980ft) climb, over 3km (1.9 miles) to Routeburn Falls promises to be the highlight of your day. The walk up to the waterfall is somewhat more challenging than the first section of the track, but most of our walkers make the effort and agree the view makes it all worth it.

Dinner at the Botswana Butchery

The historic cottage and villa that comprises Botswana Butchery Queenstown has many different faces. From al fresco dining overlooking the lake to private rooms for anything from two to thirty people. A private upstairs bar to relax into, warming open fires throughout and a large climate controlled wine cellar. A most versatile and entrancing evening out.

Cape Brett Walking Track

Cape Brett Track traverses through native and regenerating bush. The track runs along the ridge through Maori-owned land before reaching conservation land at Deep Water Cove - Manawahuna for the last 6 km of the track. You can take a side-track (1 hr return) down to Deep Water Cove, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim and snorkel. From the forested ridges, you can take in spectacular coastal scenery. Towards the Cape, walking alongside the dramatic cliff-face, you can see abundant fish and bird life below - often dolphins and seals will come close to shore. From Deep Water Cove onwards, the track gets more challenging and becomes quite exposed with steep drop-offs to the sea below. Although it is not that far to the lighthouse, it will take you about 2-3 hours, and can be quite tiring. The effort is rewarded with outstanding views of the outer Bay of Islands, north to the Cavalli Islands and south to Whangaruru and beyond to the Poor Knights Islands.
