Niger River canyoning/spelunking adventure
With spectacular views out to the alpine scenery, it is particularly beautiful and hugely enjoyable. It features exciting abseils in strong water flows. The situations are dramatic and the abseils often take you into and behind spectacular waterfalls – visually sensational and very dynamic. Big Nige is a longer day – be prepared for around four hours of continuous descent (and the walk up the hill takes 40 minutes). As we descend we link into Niger Stream with its many jumps and slides – so you get in a lot of everything… Group sizes are small and personal (max of four in a group). This trip is for people who want a bigger day of hands-on action and enormous amounts of fun.
Routeburn Track Guided Walk/Hike
Enter the wilderness sanctuary of the Mount Aspiring National Park, gateway to the world famous Routeburn Track. Relish the invigorating 6.5km (4 mile) walk to the Routeburn Flats, with time to linger by the river as it meanders across the alpine meadow. As you walk your guide will point out the unique flora and birdlife of the Routeburn Valley. Enjoy a hot drink with lunch at Routeburn Flats Hut while taking in the splendour of the surrounding mountains. For those who want a little more adventure, the 300m (980ft) climb, over 3km (1.9 miles) to Routeburn Falls promises to be the highlight of your day. The walk up to the waterfall is somewhat more challenging than the first section of the track, but most of our walkers make the effort and agree the view makes it all worth it.

There are over 20km of tracks through a variety of vegetation unique to Marlborough high country, from open tussock to matagouri and mature bush. Watch out for rarer species such as native broom, miniature kowhai and large tree fuchsias. Keen walkers can also take the new Waihopai Walking Track which links Cob Quarters to the cabin. Those looking for a challenge can take a guided trek to the top of Mt Stronvar (summit 1350m). Swim in the crystal clear Waihopai or Spray Rivers. Borrow a tube from the homestead and drift down the river. Rides back upriver are available on request. Enjoy birdwatching or perhaps take advantage of the two bikes which are kept at the Cob Quarters for complimentary guest use.
The Tongariro Crossing (Transfers/Self guided)
is often called the best one-day walk in New Zealand.
Its volcanic terrain offers a fascinating look at a very alien environment, complete with twisted lava formations, volcanic steam vents and colorful crater lakes. The scenery is so fantastic - so otherworldly - that the region was used as a natural film set in Peter Jackson's film Lord of the Rings. Although only 18 kilometres (12 miles) long, the changing terrain that the Tongariro Crossing traverses is magnificent. During this strenous 8hr hike past Mt Ngauruhoe and over Mt Tongariro. You'll pass over a lunar landscape unlike anything you've seen before, then descend past the Red Crater, Blue and Emerald Lakes and down into beautiful native bush. You will be dropped off at the start of the track and picked up on the other side at the finished.
