The Bay of Islands are in the Northland region in the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. Located 60 kilometres north-west of Whangarei, the bay is a natural harbour with an irregular 16 kilometre wide inlet. Several sections of the bay extend into the land, notably Waikare Inlet in the south and Kerikeri and Te Puna (Mangonui) inlets in the north-west. The small town of Russell is located at the end of a short peninsula that extends into the bay from the south-east. The Bay of Islands region has the finest maritime park in New Zealand with the 144 Islands and secluded bays. The Bay has an abundance of marine life, including the big marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species. On the East Coast of Northland, Opua, Waitangi, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri all make up part of the Bay of Islands, a world-reknowned tourist destination and the cultural centre of New Zealand. The Bay of Islands is a stunningly beautiful length of sand and rock coastline that circles a sea pierced by 150 islands. Wherever you are in the Bay of Islands, it's impossible to escape the lure of the sea. Catch a ferry or charter boat and immerse yourself in the blue-green world of island and beach.

Home of Ngapuhi, with a history of our earliest European settlement and fascinating places to explore. Waitangi is where New Zealand's founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840. The maritime and historic park is the original cradle of European civilization and has fine examples of Maori culture. Some of New Zealand's oldest buildings are found in the Bay of Islands. Desirable Kerikeri is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing towns and a horticultural hub with significant orchard plantings. Many yachties arriving from the Northern hemisphere make their first contact in New Zealand at the Port of Opua. The Bay with its pristine natural environment is the gathering place in the South Pacific for overseas sailing yachts on world cruises, international sport fishermen, golfers and marine enthusiasts. Swimming with dolphins is another specialty of the Bay of Islands. Many operators in the region offer excellent trips to spectacular Cape Brett and the 'Hole in the Rock' on Piercy Island. The townships of this historical bay are alive with memories of the area's colourful history. Visitors are welcome to explore the well-preserved relics of the past, both Maori and European, in romantic Russell, Paihia, Waitangi or Kerikeri.
