Hawke's Bay Wine Country is a holiday destination where the sun seems to forever shine. Famed for being one of the three major winemaking regions in New Zealand, Hawke's Bay is home to internationally acclaimed wines and is the premier New Zealand destination for food, wine and lifestyle. Supported by a Mediterranean climate and a varied landscape from dramatic sea cliffs, to fertile plains and crystal clear rivers that meander down to the Pacific Ocean, the region has a diverse range of things to see and do and hosts a number of icon events through out the year. For families enjoying the sun, there are golden sand beaches, water theme parks, public swimming pools and crystal clear rivers. Swim with dolphins, visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand farm tours, or see the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. For the thrill seeker there's plenty to fuel your adrenaline from jet-boating, hot air ballooning, surfing, caving and paragliding to sailing and windsurfing. Day walks, hunting or fishing and golf are popular past times too. Havelock North is dubbed the heart of Hawke’s Bay Wine Country and is surrounded by many of New Zealand’s top wineries including Te Mata Estate and new comer Craggy Range. More than 30 vineyards are open to the public for wine tasting.

Havelock North (five minutes east of Hastings) has grown rapidly over recent years but has retained its ‘village’ feel. On any warm spring or summer Saturday morning you can collect your fresh food delights from the Village Growers Market held at Black Barn Vineyards. Afterwards wander back into the Village where the cafe culture is alive and kicking, as is the art scene with several galleries and studios. A feature looming above the hills of Havelock North is Te Mata Peak, which rises 399 majestic metres above sea level. The peak dominates the fertile plains and provides panoramic views across to Mahia, the ski slopes of Mt Ruapehu and out towards the Ruahine Ranges. Napier and Hastings are only 20 minutes apart and provide a wide variety of attractions for visitors. Napier is the Art Deco City, a legacy of the devastating 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, which flattened many buildings throughout the region. Hastings and its surrounding countryside boast verdant vineyards and orchards. Hastings city has beautiful parks and some stunning examples of Spanish Mission architecture. The Northern Hawke’s Bay's district of Wairoa features sandy beaches, rocky coastlines, fresh water lakes, caves and some of New Zealand’s best trout fishing rivers. A visit to Te Urewera National Park takes in Lake Waikaremoana, an unspoiled wilderness where native bush walks and water activities are plentiful. Towards the coast, Mahia Peninsula offers some ‘wicked’ surfing beaches along with some of the best fishing and diving spots in New Zealand. At the end of a busy day you can unwind in the Morere Hot Springs set amidst gigantic nikau palms.

SCENIC HIGHLIGHTS:

Fabulous Art Deco Architecture: Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930s following a massive Richter 7.9 earthquake. Subsequent fires destroyed most of its commercial heart. By the end of the decade, Napier was the newest city on the globe. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco - in such a concentrated area. And Napier's Art Deco is unique, with Maori motifs and the buildings of Louis Hay, admirer of the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

A Landscape Lined with Vineyards: Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s premier wine producing regions. It is known for its Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A sunny climate, combined with excellent growing conditions and the artistry of the winemakers, has led to world recognition for many Hawke’s Bay wineries. Soak up the atmosphere in one of the many cafes and restaurants or dine alfresco amidst the vineyards, orchards and olive plantations, and there is often live music to enhance your experience.

Climb to the Top of Te Mata Peak: Te Mata Peak towers 400 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Ruahine, Kaweka and Maungaharuru ranges and Cape Kidnappers.
