Built along similar lines to the Lodge with a high pitched ceiling and extensive double glazed windows, the Whare Kea Chalet is no ordinary mountain hut, rather a true extension of the comfort and luxury of Whare Kea Lodge. The overall design concept was to minimise the Chalet's impact on the environment. Conceived to maximise the breathtaking views the Chalet has two double bedrooms for four guests. Two additional guests can be accommodated in a comfortable and spacious loft. The guide and house staff member share a third bedroom. Everyone shares the combined lounge, bathroom, dining and kitchen area. Located at 5,600ft (1700m) in the Buchanan mountain range beside the Mount Aspiring National Park , the Whare Kea Chalet site enjoys direct sun all day. The chalet has stunning views from Mount Cook on the north east horizon, to Mount Aspiring looming 10,000ft (3000m) in the west. Between Mount Aspiring and the Chalet, the remote forest filled East Matukituki River valley lies 4,000ft (1200m) below. In summer, the vista is one of high rocky mountains, glaciers, residual snowfields and alpine meadows. In winter, the Chalet lies under a deep blanket of snow.

Facilities: The Whare Kea Chalet is gas heated and has a 240V solar and wind generated electricity supply for guests comfort and convenience. There is an internal washroom, however for environmental reasons the toilet is located externally at the edge of the rear deck.
